If you are using Servlet 2.4 / JSP 2.0 you can replace these ugly scriptlets in your first example with EL expresions like this: <input type="text" name="${status.expression}" value="${status.displayValue">. This looks much cleaner to me and you have the possibility to validate your jsps with a XML processor.
